ANNABETH GISH YOUNG MOVIE
Now, it's fine for a movie to be earnest, and Julio Gallo, for that matter, but it does make "Desert Bloom" rather a slog.
There is the scene where Rose stumbles in on Dad kissing someone he oughtn't and slams out through the screen door. There is the scene where Dad (Jon Voight) busts up the kitchen in a drunken rage. There is the scene where glamorous Aunt Starr (Ellen Barkin) dresses Rose up for her first dance, complete with "falsies." There is the scene where Rose gets her first kiss. What follows is an earnest movie about a girl's coming of age. Or I should say, the bespectacled eyes, for at the outset, young Rose gets a pair of glasses that allows her to really see life for the first time, in all the bitterness and sweetness of its bittersweetness. "Desert Bloom," an after-school special writ large (although not too large), re-creates the world of Las Vegas in 1950 through the eyes of a 13-year-old Rose Chismore (Annabeth Gish).
